Labor Day 2024

Jim Mease

Happy Labor Day! Rehoboth Beach Main Street extends best wishes to everyone during this Holiday weekend.

It's hard to believe it is September already, and we are nearing the end of our summer season as we get ready to celebrate Labor Day on September 2nd this year. Created by the late 19th-century labor movement, Labor Day is the only federal holiday celebrated in September.  It is a time when we pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of the American worker. Always celebrated on the first Monday in September, Labor Day signals the unofficial start of the fall season. It is generally the month students return to school and football season begins. As the last days of summer morph into Fall, which officially arrives September 22nd. On that day, the Autumnal Equinox occurs: The sun is above the equator, and there are equal hours of daylight and darkness.  Finally, September's full moon, known as the Harvest Moon, signals it's time to gather up the rest of the harvest and prepare for the winter.

Closer to home, here in Rehoboth Beach, the Hazy, Hot, and Humid days of summer, along with the crowds it brings to the beach, have left, and the Shoulder Season has begun.  While the weather is more moderate, it is still nice to be out enjoying the beach and boardwalk. Even better, on September 15th parking in Rehoboth Beach will be free, so you can enjoy all of the restaurants, bars, and boutiques, as well as other miscellaneous shopping experiences without worrying about parking meters. September also has its share of daily, weekly, and monthly observances providing reasons to celebrate. Some of the more fun, quirky, or lesser-known reasons to celebrate include Eat an Extra Dessert Day on September 4, National Cheese Pizza Day on September 5, International Chocolate Day on September 13, National Pancake Day on September 26, and National Coffee Day on September 29. Weekly observances include National Singles Week September 15–21 and Constitution Week September 17–23, while monthly observances include Classical Music, National Chicken, and Courtesy Month.

To help you plan your month with friends and family, Rehoboth Beach Main Street has selected several of our member businesses to showcase for you this month. One great place to stay overnight is the Hotel Rehoboth located at 247 Rehoboth Avenue, where amenities include an outdoor pool, bicycles to rent, complimentary wireless internet access, and concierge services. Another great hotel is the Admiral on Baltimore, located at 2 Baltimore Avenue with a 7-minute walk to the boardwalk and beach. Both hotels are within walking distance to many restaurants. Three recommended restaurants are Claws Seafood House at 167 Rehoboth Avenue, which has a family-friendly dining atmosphere inside and a covered porch perfect for cool evenings to enjoy crabs and a fresh selection of fish and delicious soups and salads–and a sister restaurant, FINS Fish House and Raw Bar, at 167 Rehoboth Avenue. Another fine restaurant is the Back Porch Cafe, at 59 Rehoboth Avenue, where you can enjoy seasonal and creative dishes from Mediterranean, Spanish, French, and Irish cuisines. For your shopping enjoyment, we encourage you to visit Penny Lane Mall at 42 Rehoboth Avenue. It is an open-air market with shops selling handmade and unique goods including toys, jewelry, ice cream, and miscellaneous gifts of all sizes and shapes.

All these businesses are in downtown Rehoboth Beach, within easy walking distance to the beach and boardwalk. Along the way you can enjoy the beautiful flowers in various earth planters located downtown, meticulously maintained by Rehoboth in Bloom volunteers. All offer a friendly, welcoming atmosphere to help you enjoy your time in Rehoboth Beach.

Remember to be mindful of your surroundings and watch out for bikes, dog walkers, and children as the days grow shorter and traffic patterns change on September 15th.

Showcasing Rehoboth Businesses

Penny Lane Mall

Peter Beck

Located in the heart of downtown Rehoboth Beach, Penny Lane is an ideal spot for shoppers in our city.  Just a few feet away from the boardwalk and the music stand, it's a truly convenient spot for your shopping needs.

The Penny Lane Mall features a diverse selection of shops, ensuring that everyone will be satisfied. Many stores have been around for decades. Need some new lamps for your home?  Look no further than Penny Lane Lighting!  Want to buy a unique gift for a friend?  Stop in at Sea Finds!  Ready for a snack?  Visit Cafe Papillon for a French-inspired meal.  Sit at the tables and people watch as if you are in the cafes of Paris.  Stroll into Penny Lane Liquors to pick up some libations for your evening, or drop into Fun For All Toys to find an ideal gift for the kiddies.

New visitors to our city are often surprised to discover the Penny Lane Mall, and they enjoy strolling down the lane and experiencing the cozy ambiance of the European-inspired lane.  With easy access to Rehoboth and Wilmington Avenues, it's a favorite place for vacationers and locals.

Four years ago, Penny Lane Mall was recently named the most underrated place in Delaware—and it's no wonder for this hidden gem with its family-owned small businesses and some of the best (tax-free!) shopping in Delaware.   “The world-famous vacation town of Rehoboth Beach is known for its pristine sand, clean water, family-friendly boardwalk, and more. No trip to the beach is complete without stopping in to shop along the tucked-away Penny Lane Mall. It was recently named the Best Kept Secret in Delaware, and you’ll soon discover why it’s a must-visit here in the First State.” (Posted in Delaware Attractions July 26, 2020, by Kim Magaraci.)

Penny Lane Mall is located at 42 Rehoboth Avenue. Be sure to stroll through and pretend you are spending a few days in Europe!

Admiral on Baltimore

Peter Beck

Located just steps from the beach and boardwalk, the Admiral Hotel is ideal for visiting Rehoboth Beach. You can't find a better location in town to enjoy a fabulous stay at the beach! The hotel is just steps away from the Rehoboth Boardwalk and the beach. It takes just seconds to stroll down the block or over to Rehoboth Avenue to visit our town's shops and restaurants.

The Admiral is a family-operated hotel dedicated to providing the most comfortable experience to guests. The hotel has recently been renovated to ensure a comfortable, relaxing environment for their guests. Many of the rooms have lovely views of the ocean. Imagine how nice it would be to chill in your room and look out at the natural beauty of the sea.

At the Admiral Hotel, if you need to escape from the beach crowds, you can relax in the indoor pool or go up to the rooftop deck to bask in the sun and enjoy the view. A major perk is that the Admiral offers complimentary parking for ONE car, which is a great advantage in the busy summer season. As well, children under 12 stay free at the Admiral!

Be sure to check out their website: The Admiral on Baltimore. You can learn about cost-saving promos that the hotel offers during the off-season and during the summer months. Also on the website, you can check rates, learn more about the hotel’s amenities, and make a reservation!

The Admiral Hotel has many guests who come in time and time again, some reporting that they have been staying there for 20-30 years! The Admiral Hotel must be doing something right!!

Inside Hotel Rehoboth Rehoboth Beach's Ultimate Boutique Hotel

Colleen Evans

Are you dreaming of a luxe beach getaway this fall? You can do just that at the Hotel Rehoboth, at 247 Rehoboth Avenue. This gem of a boutique beach hotel offers impeccable service, an amazing location, and unbeatable beach access. Whether your plans include a relaxing getaway with friends or family, the Hotel Rehoboth has everything you need to make your stay memorable.

The hotel's lobby and guest rooms are airy and luxe, decorated in hues reflecting Coastal Delaware beaches with sumptuous textures and wood elements that make every space lend itself to a coastal feel. All 52 guest rooms and suites feature luxury creature comforts, high-end toiletries in the shower, plush robes in the wardrobe, and high thread count linens on the bed. Suites have expansive living rooms for a quick lounge or afternoon drink though with so many restaurants and bars to experience, it'd be a shame to hide out.

There's no better way to start your morning than a gourmet breakfast buffet in Lupo restaurant, located on the hotel's street level. Included in the hotel room rate is a made-from-scratch bountiful breakfast buffer that is only offered to in-house hotel guests.

After breakfast head down to the beach - with a complimentary shuttle manned by the hotel's well-known and loved ambassador Eddie - and splash the day away in the surf, or laze about in the sun, then head back to your hotel room, no need to even get in the car, and just steps out the hotel's front door to great shopping, art galleries, and an incredible selection of restaurants.

But beyond good looks and superior amenities, gracious hospitality is at the heart of Hotel Rehoboth. They've thought about every little thing that guests will need from a coastal boutique hotel: afternoon wine and cheese, to evening homemade chocolate chip cookies and turn-down service. The Hotel Rehoboth team just loves hosting new and returning guests and creating memorable experiences for them. Their goal is to be welcoming and go above and beyond to make your stay fabulous.

Hotel Rehoboth is one of the best-rated hotels in Coastal Delaware and offers endless options, exceptional service, and excellence in an intimate, unique setting to create your ideal vacation and an unforgettable experience.

Cheers to 50 Years! The Back Porch Café celebrates casual fine dining!

Colleen Evans

More than 50 years in, The Back Porch Cafe, at 59 Rehoboth Avenue, is a shining fine dining institution.  The restaurant is a stunning space that exudes warmth and energy, and has earned its excellent reputation through its approachable yet well-executed menu,

The owners since 2019 - Dmitri Shubich and wife Aksana Varanova - knew to keep all the best parts of the restaurant in place, continuing to serve The Back Porch’s legendary Crisp Veal Sweetbread, Pepper Cured Loin of Tuna, Rabbit Bolognese, Pan Seared Halibut, Key Lime Pie, and White Chocolate Bread Pudding.  Exuding elegance without pretension, the impeccable service and delectable food promise an unforgettable experience.

Shubich explains what is so special about their familiar favorites on the menu for the last 50 years.  “Our coffee is an organic French Roast, purchased from a fair trade-based company, we make everything but the baguettes here in house. That includes the jam offered at Sunday Brunch, the Ginger Beer made fresh for the Dark and Stormy's, and freshly squeezed lemonade.” And while the food is fantastic, the staff also makes this spot a pleasure to dine at.

The Back Porch is a common meeting spot for visitors and Rehoboth Beach’s community movers and shakers. And it’s no wonder, with its outstanding wine selections and chef-driven menu.

Restaurant trends may come and go, but the backbone of Rehoboth Beach is its classic restaurants – and there’s no better time to try restaurant icon the Back Porch!

Recognizing Our Volunteers: Steve Scheffer

Mark May

While Steve is newly elected to the RBMS Board and serves as the Chair for our Economic Vitality Committee, he is no stranger to neighbors and businesses in Rehoboth Beach. Steve was a former City Commissioner from 2018 to 2020 and has served on the City’s Bandstand and Convention Center Committee (2018-2021). Steve and his wife, Daphne, have lived in Rehoboth Beach full-time since 2017; community involvement has been his theme from the beginning!

Before being named to the Board, Steve served on RBMS’s Economic Vitality Committee since 2018 and was co-chair last year.   Steve and Daphne are both retired Federal employees. Steve worked for the US Department of Education as a supervisory contracting officer and contract specialist during his 5-year tour at DoE.  Before that, Steve worked for various consulting firms including Price Waterhouse, IBM, Perot Systems, and Dell Services as an acquisition manager and contracts manager.

Steve grew up in Altoona, PA where he attended Altoona Area High School and then off to Penn State University where he majored in Economics.  Steve attended Penn State on a Navy ROTC scholarship and received his commission as an Ensign in the US Navy Supply Corps upon graduation. In the Navy, he held a variety of leadership positions in customer service, purchasing, and acquisition, including payroll and retail operations aboard the supply ship, USS Kalamazoo.

As City residents, Steve and Daphne love the convenience and vitality of our downtown. Steve enjoys walking, biking, and reading as well as the shopping and dining venues in town.  Welcome aboard to Steve. RBMS is very fortunate to have him on deck!

City Update!

Paving Projects

Several significant paving projects are planned for this fall. As soon as the summer parking season is over, overnight work to repave the length of Rehoboth Avenue will begin. Work will occur from 6 pm-6 am daily Sunday evening through Friday morning. Lane closures will occur overnight during the work; flaggers will be on-site to assist with traffic control. Parking restrictions will be necessary in work zones

Also starting in mid-September, the city will work on replacing a water main and some associated piping in the ocean block of Maryland Avenue with paving to follow along with 1st Street from Baltimore Avenue to past Virginia Avenue. Maryland Avenue will be closed to through traffic and lane closures should be expected on 1st Street while work is ongoing. Resident access will be maintained throughout the project.

Updates for both projects will be posted to the Additional Projects page at Reach Out Rehoboth.

Tedder Talks Debuts!

Monthly ‘Tedder Talks’ video series designed to bring enhanced communication, transparency to Rehoboth community The City of Rehoboth Beach has released the first episode of Tedder Talks – Rehoboth Beach, a monthly video program that features City Manager Taylour Tedder interacting with city staff and community members to share information about city programs and community efforts. The nearly eight-minute August program, which introduces efforts related to enhanced transparency and focuses on the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, is available on the city’s YouTube channel. “I started a Tedder Talks monthly video program when I was city manager in Boulder City,” Tedder says. “It was well-received and served as a great tool to provide information about people and issues impacting the city. We thought we’d try it here as a fresh, friendly way for the community to receive information.”

Residents and viewers may share comments about Tedder Talks – Rehoboth Beach and general feedback for the city manager via the city’s Reach Out Rehoboth engagement platform. Comments can be shared via the Talk to CM Taylour Tedder tool on the Hot Topics page.

The city has contracted with W Films to produce the monthly programs. The September episode will focus on code enforcement.

Bring on the fall events

Even though Summer Concert Series performances are coming to an end after this weekend, there's a lot of activity on tap for this fall. September and October are two of the busiest months in Rehoboth Beach for special events. And the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market continues through October, every Tuesday from 10:00am-2:00pm at Grove Park.

City-approved special events (and only those that are approved by the city) are posted to the City of Rehoboth Beach online calendar; typically a link to the event's website can be found there.
