November is the 11th month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. It was named after the Latin word "Novem," which means nine, as it was the 9th month in the Roman calendar. It has 30 days and marks the end of autumn in the northern hemisphere. Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday, Nov 3rd, at 2am, and the time returns to standard.
We can vote for our representatives in federal, state, and local government offices in November. The government's authority to protect voting rights comes from post-Civil War amendments and civil rights movement legislation. Over 100 election-related lawsuits have been filed so far this cycle. This year's elections are scheduled for November 5th. RBMS encourages every American citizen to exercise this right, as the president, vice president, and many other officials will be on the ballot.
On November 11, we celebrate Veterans Day, the first of two federal holidays observed that honor US Armed Forces veterans. The nation's largest Veterans Day event, the New York City Veterans Day Parade hosted by the United War Veterans Council, will return in 2024 for its 105th year.
On November 28, we celebrate Thanksgiving, which holds a special place in the hearts of Americans as it is a time for us to give thanks for the past year's blessings. Abraham Lincoln first declared it a national holiday to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month. Still, George Washington proclaimed on Oct 3rd, 1789, naming Thursday, Nov 26 a day of “Publick Thanksgivin.” It follows a 28-year cycle, only interrupted by century and leap years. Therefore, it will fall on Nov 28 roughly every five to six years.
On June 28, 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law the Holiday Act that made Thanksgiving a yearly appointed federal holiday in Washington DC, and on January 6th,1885, an act by Congress made Thanksgiving and other federal holidays a paid holiday for all federal workers throughout the United States.
Interestingly enough, while Thanksgiving is not technically a religious holiday, President Jackson felt the “giving thanks” part was far too religious for his tastes. As expected, he stirred controversy by refusing to recognize the holiday!
Today, we have grown to cherish Thanksgiving as one of our most cherished holidays. We celebrate it with friends and family by having parades, the largest of which is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, watched by millions nationally, followed by National Football games as we feast on turkey and all of the fixins’.
Recently, we have added Black Friday on November 29 and Cyber Monday on December 2nd to our Thanksgiving traditions. These days mark the start of the Christmas shopping season, with discounted prices on all sorts of things as we begin our holiday shopping. Remember to consider small businesses as you search for the perfect gift for those on your shopping list.
One quirky fact about November is that the renowned playwright William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets. However, he did not mention the month of November in any of his writings, which leaves us to wonder about the significance or reasoning behind its absence in his works.
Rehoboth Beach Main Street is featuring some of our member businesses this month. The Atlantic Sands Hotel & Conference Center, located at 1 Baltimore Ave & the Boardwalk, offers stunning ocean views and all the amenities you need for a memorable stay. The Coast Hotel Rehoboth Beach, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, at 123 Second Street, is another great option, with luxurious amenities and the casual and elegant Sirocco restaurant offering a variety of dishes from Greece, Italy, Spain, and France. Coastal Native at 12 Rehoboth Avenue offers handmade goods by local artists with positive intentions. Lastly, consider the Jolly Trolley of Rehoboth Beach for your holiday transportation needs, providing unique options such as the Jolly Bus and Classic Trolleys since 1970.
All these businesses are located in downtown Rehoboth Beach, just a short walk from the beach and boardwalk. They all provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere in which to enjoy your time here. You can find more information about them later in this newsletter. If you visit, mention that you read about them in this newsletter – they will be glad to hear from you. Along the way, you can also appreciate the newly planted earth planters with their winter coats. The Rehoboth in Bloom volunteers have been busy replacing the summer flowers with fall foliage.
As the days grow shorter, be mindful of your surroundings and watch out for bikes, dog walkers, and children as you enjoy downtown.
Rehoboth Beach Main Street wishes everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. We look forward to the holiday season, a new year, and all the good vibes it will bring. We are thankful for the blessings bestowed on Rehoboth Beach and the DelMarVa peninsula.

Showcasing Rehoboth Businesses
Coastal Native
Peter Beck
This summer, Aileen Hearn and Kyle Ten Eyck opened Coastal Native, a new shop at 25 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. Hearn and Ten Eyck, who are from Lewes, are passionate about supporting their home seaside communities.
Coastal Native is located just a few steps from the Boardwalk in a space that used to be a jewelry store. The shop has interesting and unusual regionally-made crafts, including jewelry, kitchen decor, beach-inspired art, and souvenirs. Since the shop features items created by Delaware artisans, much of the merchandise offered for sale is unique and one-of-a-kind.
Many shoppers enjoy browsing and purchasing the wide variety of ocean-inspired art in the shop. Local artist George Todd's art is particularly popular. Todd creates eye-catching charcuterie boards, cutting boards, frames, and vases. He also teaches classes for the artistically inclined.
In 2021, Hearn and Ten Eyck opened the popular Somewhere restaurant at 52 Baltimore Avenue. Over the past three years, Somewhere has received many accolades from diners, including recognition in the annual Gumbo and Margarita Crawls sponsored by RBMS.
For Somewhere fans, customers can purchase bottles of the delicious sauces served with the cuisine at the restaurant. They also sell hot sauce from the popular Peppers of Lewes, which are all locally made products.
With the holidays approaching, stop by Coastal Native during your downtown shopping spree. You will find beautiful gifts and surprises for all your friends and family!
The Atlantic Sands Hotel & Conference Center
Dan Slagle
The Atlantic Sands Hotel & Conference Center, one of Rehoboth Beach’s largest independent hotels, is pleased to offer Rehoboth Beach Main Street a sneak peek inside the plans for the landmark Boardwalk hotel.
Opening its doors in 1959 and expanding in 2000, the Atlantic Sands is one of downtown Rehoboth Beach’s historic retreats. Open year-round, the 178-room hotel, sitting on the Boardwalk at 1 Baltimore Avenue and stretching the width of the block from Baltimore Avenue to Maryland Avenue, is undergoing an extensive multi-million-dollar transformation phased over the next several years, during which it will remain open.
“We are thrilled to see the Atlantic Sands begin its renovation project,” said General Manager Craig Galeone, “and we are thankful to the owner for their investment and look forward to welcoming locals and visitors alike to enjoy the elevated offerings within the resort that has been serving Rehoboth Beach visitors for generations.”
With an ongoing focus on the guest experience, a highlight of the first phase of renovations was the Memorial Day weekend debut of 78 modernized one-bedroom suites. Guests can choose from an array of different views and many feature furnished balconies with partial views of the ocean.
The newly designed suites embrace a fresh, modern aesthetic, showcasing brand new furniture, along with new wallpaper and carpeting. Each suite features upgraded fixtures, including headboards, drapery, lounge chairs, lamps and side tables to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay for guests of all ages.
Beginning in 2025, the Atlantic Sands will embark on Phase 2 of its renovation and development plan to ensure the resort remains a sought-after destination. Current plans include:
● Oceanfront Rooms/Suites are being transformed strategically in stages to minimize disruptions to the guest experience.
● Kiwi’s Kove will rebrand in the coming months and have a new moniker. In keeping with the casual beachside character of the hotel, the year-round full-service restaurant will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner with stunning ocean views.
● To further elevate the guest experience, the saltwater pool deck will feature a new poolside beverage and light bites menu.
● Event catering at the Atlantic Sands reaches new heights with the introduction of new chef-driven catering packages.
Beyond the physical and culinary upgrades, the Atlantic Sands is expanding its amenities to offer an exciting range of activities and services to entertain visitors of all ages.
Experience the transformation firsthand. Book your Rehoboth Beach escape at the Atlantic Sands today. Visit https://atlanticsandshotel.com or follow @atlanticsandshotel on Instagram.
Jolly Trolley
Mark May
Serving the area since 1970, Jolly Trolley is a fun and efficient way to take in the tourist destinations of Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach. Operating its signature Original Jolly Trolley Shuttle for the summer between Memorial and Labor Day, Jolly Trolley ferries passengers between Rehoboth and Dewey, allowing them to beat traffic and enjoy their day! With numerous stops in both beach towns, Jolly Trolley’s convenience is unmatched. Whether you are planning to enjoy a day on the beach or downtown, their stops cut down on wasted time in traffic and alleviate parking headaches. During peak summer season the Jolly Trolley can be expected to arrive every 15 minutes, giving passengers both scheduling flexibility and transportation reliability.
Although well-known for their famous trollies, Jolly Trolley services have expanded to include a variety of other transport offerings, including limousine services and charter services. Whether you need transportation for a large group event, a ride to a nearby airport or transit hub, or a designated chauffeur, Jolly Trolley will get you there. Visit their website to check out their full schedule of upcoming Tours & Trips. Tickets can be purchased online for upcoming regional events, such as Longwood Garden Christmas.
Jolly Trolley continues its legacy of providing safe and reliable transport to Rehoboth Beach and the surrounding areas so you can enjoy your plans without the distractions or stress of traffic and parking. Visit their website for more details regarding schedules, pricing, events, and more!
Welcome to the Coast Hotel
Peter Beck
Formerly the Sandcastle Hotel and the popular bar/restaurant Conch Island, which was there for almost 35 years, the Coast Hotel opened to great fanfare in July 2023 in Rehoboth Beach. After a two-year renovation, the hotel was gutted top to bottom.
In 2023, the Coast received the prestigious Cottage and Town award from Rehoboth Beach Main Street. The award is given to businesses that “recognize property owners who contribute to the community's beauty, charm, and history through their work on their properties.”
One look at the Coast Hotel and you can see why it was selected for this honor. The redesigned exterior reflects our beach town's long-standing coastal traditions and style but with a model twist!
The moment you walk into the Coast, you will receive a warm, cheerful greeting and will be impressed by the luxurious and comfortable atmosphere. General manager Alli Hutchinson enthusiastically explained that The Coast Rehoboth Beach is part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton and is now a beautifully appointed upscale boutique hotel in an ideal location right in the center of town! The rooms, including the inviting lobby, reception area, and the Sirocco restaurant, are meticulously appointed!
The rooms have been made significantly larger by removing the balconies that were there before. This provides more space to relax, enjoy your stay in Rehoboth Beach, and take advantage of the hotel's many amenities. The hotel offers an outdoor patio with a fire pit, a 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness center, an indoor saltwater pool, and access to bike rentals!
During the off-season, the Coast offers special rates for exciting events such as the Sea Witch Festival and the Jazzfest. Visit their website at https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/sbyupup-coast-rehoboth-beach/ or call the front desk at 302-227-0400.
The hotel has achieved remarkable success in its first two summers, and we are excited about the prosperous years ahead.
Sirocco Food and Drink
Peter Beck
On a beautiful Wednesday evening in the fall, my friend Maria and I decided to have our weekly "night out on the town" at Sirocco Food and Drink, the new Mediterranean-themed restaurant in the recently renovated Coast Hotel at 123 Second Street. Sirocco replaced the popular Conch Island, which relocated just outside the city limits when the hotel was gutted and renovated.
I am pleased to report that Sirocco is a perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing evening of outstanding food and excellent drinks in a lovely and relaxing environment.
The menu showcases the freshest local ingredients and highlights fine dining from Southern Europe, particularly Italy, Spain, and France.
Maria and I made our reservations easily through OpenTable. We arrived a few minutes early and were cheerfully greeted by the maitre d', who escorted us to the well-stocked bar while our table was prepared. Soon, our fabulous dining experience would begin.
Our experience with our waiter, Shawn, was great; he was pleasant, polite, and efficient. He ensured that we received our drinks promptly, and our delicious food arrived in no time. Maria's Caesar Salad was surprisingly large, perfect for sharing. On that chilly fall night, I opted for the scrumptious Lemon Chicken & Orzo Soup, which I savored with every single slurp. It was a delightful start to our meal!
Maria enjoyed the Pan-Seared Scallops for our main course while I chowed down on the Grilled Lamb chops. The food was quite tasty, and the portions were generous, so there was no room for dessert!
The best part of the meal was when the check arrived! Wednesday nights are “Buy One Main, Get One Free” nights—how great is that! Other fall specials include the “Taste of Italy” on Sunday, featuring entries starting at twenty dollars, Tapa Thursday with 20% off small plants, and Wine Friday with 50% off selected bottles of wine!
If you just want to have conversation and fun at the bar, stop in for Happy Hour Wednesday through Thursday from 5pm until 7pm. Enjoy drink and food specials while you imbibe.
Since Sirocco is connected to the Coast Hotel, it is open for breakfast from 7:00am until 11:00am. As breakfast is my favorite meal, I am eager to try it shortly.

CAMP Rehoboth Block Party
CAMP Rehoboth hosted its annual Block Party celebration on Sunday, October 20, from 11:00am to 4:00pm on the second block of Baltimore Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Entrance to the event was free, though donations were encouraged to CAMP Rehoboth. CAMP Rehoboth invited all community members to join the festivities and expect magnificent performances and dozens of vendors, including artists, craftspeople, non-profits, businesses, and more.
The event started in 2015 to celebrate CAMP Rehoboth’s 25th anniversary. This year, attendees were able to shop sea glass art, ceramics, photography, and body care, and learn more about local non-profit causes and businesses.
Throughout the day, performances took place mid-block at the CAMP Rehoboth stage. Rehoboth Beach’s own Roxy Overbrooke headlined the entertainment. Overbrooke has hosted the Block Party for the last two years and performed for both the opening and closing slots at the CAMP Rehoboth stage. Other entertainers included the Clear Space Theatre Company, CAMP Rehoboth Chorus ALLIANCE singers, Off 24, and Goldstar.

Art Show Was a Smash!
Peter Beck
Congratulations to former Rehoboth Beach Main Street board president Greer Maneval on her premier art show held upstairs at the Pines American Bistro on October 23, 2024. Art aficionados packed the house to appreciate the variety of Greer's watercolors on display. The titles of all of the pieces were names of well-known songs that somehow related to the subject of the art: for instance, “Peaceful Easy Feeling” the classic tune by the Eagles, was the title of a sketch of a rural covered wooden bridge. How clever is that! Most of the pieces sold within an hour of the show's start! Way to go, Greer! We are proud of you.

Bark on the Boards Event Raises Over $175,000 for Brandywine Valley SPCA!
Colleen Evans
Brandywine Valley SPCA extends a huge thanks to all who came out on October 19th to the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand to enjoy and support their annual fundraiser at the annual Bark on the Boards Block Party.
With the help of sponsors, including presenting sponsor Browseabout Books, multiple vendors, registrants, and attendees, the organization was able to raise $175,000. Emcee Madeleine Overturf from Coast TV News, performers Magnolia Applebottom and the Bachelor Boys Band, young performers from Clear Space Theater Company, and Aunt Mary Pat added a special touch to the festivities.
Much of the success is due to all the volunteers and staff who worked hard to make this year’s event successful. Funds raised at events like these help Brandywine Valley SPCA care for thousands of animals who rely on this organization each year as the region’s largest animal welfare organization—Delaware’s lost, stray, neglected animals, and survivors of animal cruelty.
The Pines Rehoboth Beach Bark After Dark evening comedy opened their venue for the evening fundraising event to keep the fun going when the sun went down. Aunt Mary Pat brought the laughs, and attendees embraced this event while spending the evening supporting animals in need.
You can still support the Brandywine Valley SPCA event by making a donation at BarkontheBoards.org.

Because it provides guidance for all aspects of life, the Surah Quran is very important in Islam. With its message, each Surah provides religious teachings and facts to help Muslims uphold their faith and practices. Peace and benefits can be obtained by reciting and considering the Al Quran. It serves as a reminder to believers of their purpose in life and the significance of adhering strictly to Islamic teachings.
