Spring

Jim Mease

It seems like winter has been around forever this year, with colder temperatures and two sizable snowstorms. Whatever the reason, it just feels different this year.

As we move into the month of March, we know the Vernal Equinox arrives on Thursday, March 20th @ 5:01am EST. Equinox comes from the Latin words for equal or night. As the sun crosses the equator, the daylight and nighttime hours are nearly equal. The equinoxes are the only times when the sun rises directly due east and sets directly due west for everyone on Earth.

This fascinated our ancient ancestors, and they often built monuments or temples to worship these occurrences. Examples worldwide include the ancient ruins of the Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico, where crowds gather at the El Castillo pyramid to celebrate the equinox. Another notable site is Stonehenge, the prehistoric stone circle monument on Salisbury Plain near Wiltshire, England. This site is aligned with the sun and is believed to have been used for observing both the sun and the moon, assisting ancient peoples in determining their farming calendar. Additionally, the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia is significant, as present-day Druids (Celtic priests) still gather there to celebrate the midsummer sunrise and other solar and lunar events.

Here in Rehoboth, we may not have world heritage sites, but the daily sunrises and sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean draw visitors from around the globe. Spring is a busy time as we prepare for the upcoming beach season. Businesses get ready for the crowds, and locals anticipate visits from family and friends. All of this preparation, though often hidden, lays the groundwork for a successful 2025 beach season.

March is filled with holidays and observances, marking the transition to warmer days. First, Daylight Saving Time starts on March 9th, when clocks spring forward an hour.

Notable events include Mad for Plaid Month, which celebrates various plaid designs. On March 1st, we observe Share a Smile Day, reminding us that small gestures can spread joy. March 6th is National Oreo Cookie Day, perfect for enjoying Oreos with milk. Interestingly, March sees a 50% increase in vasectomies, coinciding with couch time during March Madness.

St. Patrick's Day on March 17th celebrates the patron saint of Ireland and famously dyes the Chicago River green. In Rehoboth, bars and restaurants will offer food and drink specials to honor the occasion!

This month, Rehoboth Beach Main Street is excited to celebrate several of our member businesses. Bad Hair Day at 20 Lake Ave is Delaware's first and only Aveda lifestyle salon, spa, barber, and retail center. If you’re looking for a day filled with great beer, fresh oysters, delicious food, live music, giveaways, and good vibes, then 302 Social Eatery and Barroom at Rehoboth Avenue, Ste 210, is the place to visit.  Another fantastic option is Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats, the first brewpub in Delaware at 320 Rehoboth Ave. Enjoy the casual, tropical island-inspired venue that offers beautiful ocean views. For those craving pizza, Ava's Pizzeria & Wine Bar at 29 Baltimore Ave. provides a warm and inviting dining experience where local charm meets thoughtful hospitality, featuring excellent pizzas along with a large selection of wine and beer.

Explore these fantastic local businesses and support our vibrant community!

Rehoboth Beach Main Street's Rehoboth in Bloom will host its annual fundraiser, "It's a Bloomin Dance Party," on March 28th from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center, 229 Rehoboth Avenue. Join us after dining downtown! Tickets, including coffee, snacks, and dessert, are $32.64 online or at the door. Beer and wine are available for donation.

Residents and tourists alike are cautioned to observe speed limits and watch out for bicyclists and pedestrians as the days grow longer and people are out and about in downtown Rehoboth.  Later in this newsletter, you can read more about our highlighted member businesses. Stay safe and enjoy your time in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats

Maria Misak

I love going out with friends, and I firmly believe in supporting local businesses, especially those that support the community.

Few businesses embody community support as much as Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats at 320 Rehoboth Avenue. From their continued support of RBMS to sponsorship of various events around the area, their easily recognizable logo seems to be everywhere.

I gathered friends on a recent Wednesday night to experience live band karaoke. They were skeptical, but I plied them with some Dogfish Head spirits, and by the time we were halfway through a plate of “dog pile nachos”, they were ready to get on stage with the Nick Kashmanian Trio. The song list is impressive, spanning from ABBA to ZZ Top. Do you want a Janis Joplin song? They have you covered. Garth Brooks? No problem. AC/DC? Child’s play. Check out the band’s website to see the current list of available songs:

The Dogfish menu has something for everyone and every palate - many tempting options from surf to turf, wood-grilled burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and a children’s menu. This evening, we decided to share several appetizers. The aforementioned “dog pile nachos” are made with their 90 IPA beef chili, spinach artichoke dip, and cumin crema - definitely not your standard nachos. They were quickly devoured. We also enjoyed wood-grilled dry rub wings, which were nice and meaty, and the fried calamari with a very tasty honey sambal sauce.

I’m a big fan of our state cocktail, and Dogfish puts their own spin on the orange crush with their orange mango citrus vodka; it’s a struggle only to have one. But as the designated driver that evening, I let my friends experiment with the drink menu since it was their first time there. Most people think “beer” or “IPA” when they hear “brewery,” and although Dogfish has many to choose from, they offer so much more. The group couldn’t pick a favorite, but more than one “Fig’et about it” and “Nutty Caucasian,” all made with Dogfish spirits, was enjoyed.

Visit the Dogfish website (https://www.dogfish.com) to learn about the brewery and distillery as well as off-season specials, events, and entertainment at Brewings and Eats and its companion restaurant at 316 Rehoboth Avenue, Chesapeake and Maine. “The Empourium” is conveniently located between the two, so you can take home your favorite Dogfish brews, spirits, and canned offerings. (The pineapple orange rum Mai Tai is my friend Peter’s favorite.)

Good food, good drinks, good times, and great local business; Dogfish makes supporting local easy!

We’ll return on March 21st for the Dogfish GD Beer rollout party from 9-11 pm. The Wharf Rats, a Grateful Dead cover band, will be performing and it’s sure to be a great - correction, a groovy -time. Join us!

Ava’s PIzzeria and WIne Bar

Peter Beck

Whenever guests from out of town visit me in Rehoboth, my go-to restaurant is Ava’s Pizzeria and Wine Bar, conveniently located at 29 Baltimore Avenue, at the corner of First Street.

The first time I visited Avas, about a year after they opened, I asked the waitress about the meatballs, claiming nothing could match my mom’s. She returned with a complimentary meatball for my taste test a moment later. There was a dramatic pause at our table, and I tried it. I can tell you it was as good as my mom’s! The waitress's thoughtfulness won me over from that moment on.

Ava's Pizzeria & Wine Bar is perfect for an inviting and delightful dining experience! With a menu crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, every dish—from the dough and sauce to the cheese—is made in-house, showcasing a genuine commitment to quality that stands out in today’s fast-paced food culture.

The menu features 12-inch thin-crust or Detroit-style pizzas with various styles and toppings available, including a gluten-free option for those who need it. Being a victim of habit, my choice is usually the Meatball Breeze pizza.  The pizza is so filling that I always get a doggie bag for lunch the next day!

Not in the mood for pizza? The menu also offers delicious salads, hearty entrees, and tasty appetizers. I always order the incredible spinach dip with amazing crispy bow-tie pasta for dipping!  Sometimes, I just want to eat several portions of the bow-ties as my dinner!

The first Ava's opened in St. Michaels, Maryland in 2008 to rave reviews. Fortunately for us, the Rehoboth location opened in 2021 in the space that had housed Jake's for 3 decades and had been vacant for three years. Ava's also has a third location in Cambridge, Maryland, if you find yourself in that area of the Delmarva Peninsula.

Stop in for happy hour, Monday through Friday, from 4 to 6 PM, and enjoy fantastic deals on refreshing cocktails, perfect for unwinding after a busy day at work or the beach.

Are you having a night when you don’t have the energy to cook? You can easily order from Avas for pickup online. Additionally, reserving a table at Ava's is a breeze! Simply visit their website and click on the “Call Ahead” waitlist for parties of 2 to 7, or quickly arrange reservations for larger groups.

At Ava's, you and your party will enjoy a memorable and relaxed evening!

302 Social Eatery and Barroom

Peter Beck

Two years back, while visiting Berlin, Maryland, my friends and I had a wonderful dinner at 402 Social, a cozy and charming spot in the heart of the town.  I remember thinking: wouldn’t it be great to have a similar restaurant here in Rehoboth?  And voila: like Houdini, not soon after that, signs went up announcing that 302 Social was coming, and I was overjoyed.

302 Social Eatery and Barroom, in the First Street Station mall at 70 Rehoboth Avenue, moved into the space that was formerly Cooter Browns. Owners Marcos Lopez, Brandon Tolan, and Albert Gjoni gave the space an incredible makeover to make it feel cozy and personal.  The restaurant's soft opening was on May 15 last year, with the official grand opening in June.

My friend Maria and I had a wonderful mid-week visit to 302 Social this fall.

While the balcony at First Street Station is a great spot to people-watch, the weather was a little too warm to sit outside comfortably.  Maybe next time!  We sat in the revamped dining area and were very impressed with the space makeover, which had previously looked rather shabby.  We particularly admired the seashore-inspired painting in the restaurant by local artist Evan Fitzgerald, which was perfect for the casual beach ambiance of the place.

We had a fantastic time enjoying our Orange Crushes, Delaware's official drink. The crab dip was delightful, especially since I asked for it to be made with "easy on the Old Bay." Sticking to my carb-conscious plan, I chose the steak salad for my main course, and it was incredibly fresh and bursting with flavor. Maria went for the delicious smash burger and fries, and we both relished our meals.

The menu at 302 Social is impressive, offering various options, including snacks, tacos, burgers, sandwiches, salads, wraps, and seafood. They have excellent "fork and knife" dishes like ribs, salmon, and crab cakes if you want something hearty. I'm really looking forward to trying the steak frites on my next visit!

Popular dishes include Short Ribs over Risotto and Asian seared salmon. 302 Social proudly offers unique options alongside traditional beach fare!

Additionally, they have a kids' menu, making it a fantastic spot for families.

Be sure to check out the amazing off-season specials at 302 Social! On Mondays, they have "Burger, Bourbon, and Brew Night," featuring $11 burgers and craft drinks. Fridays offer 25% off social snacks, and Sundays provide football specials on food and drinks.

E-gift cards are available on their website. Please note that 302 Social does not currently accept reservations, so get there early to grab a seat and have a wonderful time.

News from CAMP Rehoboth

Free Syphilis Testing

The Delaware Division of Public Health has requested that CAMP Rehoboth perform a number of syphilis tests on the public.  As part of this initiative, CAMP Rehoboth will offer free syphilis testing to the employees of Rehoboth Beach businesses safely and confidentially. CAMP Rehoboth staff and volunteers can perform the tests on-site at any workplace.

Given that syphilis cases have been on the rise nationwide, the CAMP Rehoboth staff and board members are concerned about the health of those who are most at risk in our region.

Understanding that Rehoboth Beach's hospitality and service industries host many young adults and immigrant communities, CAMP Rehoboth wants to access these populations to ensure the maintenance of their health and the community's health at large with this free service.

In addition, CAMP Rehoboth is also concerned about the well-being of immigrant communities, understanding that this population has become increasingly reticent to seek out healthcare services for fear that their personal information will be distributed to hostile government entities.

As a community-based organization, CAMP Rehoboth asserts its commitment to the well-being of everyone living around us. Our mission is to ensure community health services are provided to vulnerable populations, regardless of their legal documentation or ability to pay. All services provided are strictly in confidence.

The message CAMP Rehoboth is sending to local businesses is that healthy employees are employees who show up to work. In our current climate, we cannot afford to sacrifice the integrity of our local economy because our workers have increasingly limited access to healthcare.

For additional information, contact Vincent  DeLissio, CAMPSafe Program Coordinator, vincent@camprehoboth.org.

For the first time, you can now schedule your own appointment to get tested at CAMP Rehoboth.
