Spring is Finally Here!

Jim Mease

It's April, and winter is finally over. We can enjoy warmer weather and blooming flowers, inviting us to spend time outside after staying indoors for months. As spring progresses, we appreciate the longer, sunnier days. Easter is on April 20th this year, giving us less time to prepare for the beach. We might need to resist sweet treats like chocolate bunnies, eggs, jellybeans, marshmallow peeps, and all the candies in Easter baskets.

We have a variety of traditions and fun days to enjoy this month. The month begins with April Fools' Day on the 1st. On this day, people share jokes and play pranks to have fun. Some believe April Fools' Day began in ancient Rome during a festival called Hilaria, where people wore disguises and joked with each other. Some believe it began in 16th-century France when King Charles IX moved New Year’s Day to January 1. Those who still celebrated in spring were pranked, often with a paper fish stuck on their backs, called "Poisson d'Avril," meaning "April fish."

Don't get fooled when writing April Fools' Day. Why, you say? Well, if you know your apostrophes, then you know that putting the apostrophe after the S means plural, and since there are many pranksters on this day, that is the correct way to write it.

On April 7th, National Beer Day celebrates the Cullen-Harrison Act, enacted after President Franklin Roosevelt signed it on March 22, 1933, leading to the repeal of Prohibition. April 6th is known as New Beer's Eve.

April 11 is National Pet Day, a reminder to give our pets extra love. On April 17, we have Blah, Blah, Blah Day, which encourages trying new things and finishing overdue projects. Finally, April 24 is Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day, allowing parents to share their workplace with their kids.

In April 2025, two important religious holidays are celebrated. The first is Passover, which begins at sundown on Saturday, April 12, and ends on Sunday, April 20. This Jewish holiday is a time for families to gather for Seders and to follow cherished traditions. It reflects on Jewish history and the journey to freedom from ancient Egyptian slavery.

Easter begins with Palm Sunday on April 13, commemorating Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem. This is followed by Holy Thursday on April 17, which honors the Last Supper, and Good Friday on April 18, when Christians remember Jesus's death. Easter Sunday, April 20, celebrates Jesus's resurrection. Women wear their finest Easter bonnets during this time, and children eagerly await Easter baskets filled with chocolate bunnies and colored eggs.

This month, Rehoboth Beach Main Street is showcasing several of our member businesses for you to visit as you spend time in downtown Rehoboth Beach. For a cozy dining experience with beautiful beach views, visit Victoria's Restaurant at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel, 2 Olive Ave. They serve breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a special Sunday Brunch. The Penny Lane Mall, a small European-inspired open-air alleyway between Rehoboth and Wilmington Ave just off the boardwalk at 42 Rehoboth Avenue, offers a unique selection of shops that will appeal to the whole family. Right around the corner at 1 Wilmington Ave is Zogg's Raw Bar & Grill - Seafood Restaurant and Rum Bar offering indoor/outdoor seating with acoustic melodies on stage and great food specials. For amazing chocolate treats, check out Chocolate Wave on 1st Street.

You can read more about each of these showcased businesses later in this edition of the newsletter. As you are in downtown Rehoboth Beach, please look out for joggers, bikers, and walkers as we head into our summer beach season.

Rehoboth Beach Main Street wishes everyone a very happy Passover and Easter holiday.

The Boardwalk Plaza Hotel and Victoria's Restaurant

Dan Slagle

The Boardwalk Plaza Hotel and Victoria’s Restaurant are delighted to be Rehoboth Beach Main Street members.  Proudly standing over Rehoboth Beach’s boardwalk, this pink Victorian charmer has been a landmark property since opening its doors in 1991.  “We’re celebrating 34 years in business this June,” says Jennifer Zerby, Marketing Director (and part of the family ownership.)  “It’s wonderful to see generational guests—families that once brought their children and now coming in with their grandchildren!  We love being ambassadors and welcoming people to our beautiful beach town.”

Both the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel and Victoria’s Restaurant/The Plaza Pub are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  Beyond gracious accommodations and breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the hotel and restaurant put a special emphasis on holidays  (don’t miss the Christmas decorations!), Victorian touches such as a traditional Afternoon Tea (served by reservation only), oceanfront banquet rooms for parties, wedding receptions, and bu

Now that the warmer weather has arrived, enjoy a meal seasoned with sea breezes on their outdoor boardwalk patio!  For more information or to make a reservation, visit www.boardwalkplaza.com or call (800)33-BEACH.

Zoggs Raw Bar and  Grill

Peter Beck

After spending two months enjoying Florida's sunny weather, I was eager to find a fun and relaxing place to visit with my friend Maria upon my return home to Rehoboth Beach. I immediately thought of Zoggs Raw Bar and Grill, a fantastic spot that's easy to find, just half a block off the boardwalk at 1 Wilmington Avenue.

I always enjoy going to Zoggs, which has a Caribbean island tiki hut vibe and a casual atmosphere. I also appreciate the innovative food, which features a unique American-Caribbean fusion special to this area.

We were greeted by our amiable waitress, Bee, who served us efficiently throughout our meal.  Maria and I appreciated her excellent service and friendly banter.

We began with delicious drinks—Maria enjoyed a Mad Leprechaun to celebrate St. Patrick's Day while I savored a delightful strawberry daiquiri. As Zoggs proudly offers over 150 options, I asked Bee for a rum recommendation. She suggested Bacardi, which was perfect for my drink.

We shared some yummy edamame with sea salt for our appetizer—a relatively healthy choice. However, our main courses were not quite as healthy; Maria had a black-and-blue smash burger, while I enjoyed delicious mahi mahi tacos. Feeling celebratory, I added onion rings to my order, which offset the healthiness of the edamame.

The portions were generous, so I had to take some of my meal home in a box. The next day, I enjoyed a mahi mahi taco and some edamame for lunch!

Since there was no room for dessert, we finished our meal feeling stuffed and happy. I was thrilled to return home to such a cozy and comfortable setting.

Be sure to check out the Zoggs website for special events, like Music Bingo on Thursday nights and live music performances on weekends in the “Rum Shack,” the bar at the front of the restaurant. In warm weather, diners can enjoy the patio, which features a fire pit for those cooler evenings.

You can also order food online for pickup and consider becoming a Zoggs VIP! This way, you’ll be the first to receive updates on exclusive events, secret menus, special offers and discounts, and loyalty rewards.

I can't wait to return to Zoggs for another wonderful and casual dining experience!

The Penny Lane Mall

Dan Slagle

While in town at Rehoboth Beach, visit the charming Penny Lane Mall at 42 Rehoboth Avenue. Nestled in a quaint merchants’ alley between Rehoboth and Wilmington Avenues, Penny Lane Mall features a diverse selection of small shops selling art, décor, games, souvenirs, food, and wine and spirits. This treasure is a favorite stop for locals and vacationers alike in the heart of downtown Rehoboth Beach, but you will think you’ve stepped into a European town square market when you see it.

There is something at Penny Lane for everyone, and it is all so convenient! You are also just footsteps to the beach! One look, and it will capture you! So, come to Penny Lane Mall, support our merchants, and have tons of fun.

Historic Plaque Program

The RBMS Design Committee has decided to replace the Cottage and Town Award program with a Historic Plaque program as part of its architectural requirements for accreditation from Main Street America. Downtown business owners and landlords will be contacted to gauge their interest in allowing us to place a similar plaque on their buildings. There is no cost to the businesses; in fact, DJ, the owner of Southern Delaware Signs, has designed these beautiful plaques, each of which will cost less than $75. Ultimately, a map could be created to show the historic plaques' locations.

New Banners for Rehoboth Avenue!

With a grant from the Delaware General Assembly, at the request of then-Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf, RBMS has worked with Signarama to design new banners to be hung on the Rehoboth Avenue light poles. There are different designs, which will be hung alternately on the poles. We thank the Delaware General Assembly, Signarama, and the RBMS Design Committee for undertaking this project. The banners will be installed in late March or early April 2025.

Browseabout Books Featured in USA Today

Browseabout Books received a significant spotlight in USA Today, courtesy of the American Booksellers Association! The feature includes an interview with owner Susan Kehoe, offering insights into the beloved independent bookstore. You can find the full article at

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

Why Browseabout Books is a paradise for people who love books and beaches

Independent bookstores are the heartbeats of their communities. They provide culture and community, generate local jobs and sales tax revenue, promote literacy and education, champion and center diverse and new authors, connect readers to books in a personal and authentic way, and actively support the right to read and access books in their communities.

Each week, the American Booksellers Association profiles an independent bookstore, sharing what makes each one special and getting their expert and unique book recommendations. The ABA recently profiled Susan Kehoe, owner of Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

What’s your store’s story?

Browseabout has been a Rehoboth Beach must-visit since 1975. We are a beach and book lovers paradise with 13,000 square feet of books for all ages, toys, stationery, housewares, and a cafe.

What makes your independent bookstore unique?

Browseabout is known for our fun and friendly shopping experience, and we have something for tourists and locals alike. Our staff is knowledgeable and helpful. We make significant yearly donations to local charities, concentrating on putting books in children's hands and shelter pets, but also contributing to our local arts groups, our libraries, and members of our community who have food and shelter insecurities. We are also the official bookseller for the History Book Festival, the only history and historical fiction book festival in the country.

What's your favorite section in your store?

My favorite sections of the store are our ever-changing displays. Our buyers do an amazing job, and we always have something new, exciting, and trendy to showcase.

Why is shopping at local, independent bookstores important?

Shopping at local, independent bookstores is important because we are literally the heart of your towns and downtowns. We are passionate about what we do – we do not rely on algorithms to decide what and how much we buy. We care about our staff, our customers, and our towns. We donate and participate because we love what we do and where we live.

News from Rehoboth in Bloom

April is a very busy month for Rehoboth in Bloom!  There will be a meeting with the Leads of each team and the All Crew Potluck Breakfast will take place on the third floor of City Hall.  Thank you to the city for allowing us to use this terrific location for our gatherings.

The winter was very, very hard on our poor pansies.  But Rick Cordrey, owner of East Coast Garden Center came to the rescue.  The Cordreys donated 120  6” pots of beautiful pansies.  Some of the teams actually replanted 20 of them to spruce up the planters for the rest of the season.  We will plant the summer annuals in early May, depending on the weather.  The last thing we want to do is to plant too early and have the new flowers struggle!

Easter Candy

Easter Sunday is April 20. Many of us look forward to getting Easter baskets full of candy! You can satisfy your candy cravings by visiting the Downtown Rehoboth Beach candy shops:  Candy Kitchen, Chocolate Wave, Kilwin’s Chocolates, Rehoboth Candy Company, and Snyder’s Candy!

RBMS Volunteer Appreciation: Jerry Dettore

Jerry Filbin

This month’s volunteer recognition and appreciation goes to Jerry Dettore, who is a volunteer for RBMS’s Economic Vitality Committee. Jerry continues to be our one-person dynamo, looking at grant and low-cost loan opportunities to help small businesses. Currently, he’s developing a list of opportunities available through the State of Delaware, and he’s working on developing a workshop for downtown businesses with state officials to explore these opportunities further.

Jerry was born and raised in Pittsburgh and as proud of that as he is, he’s very happy to be living here in Eastern Sussex, retiring here in 2022!  Jerry’s degrees are in Civil Engineering/ Public Policy (Carnegie Mellon) and Urban and Regional Planning (University of Pittsburgh).  He had a long career at Pittsburgh’s Urban Redevelopment Authority, where he created collaborations with the city’s universities and the mayor’s office, working on revitalizing downtown.

We are grateful to have Jerry’s experience working for the businesses in Rehoboth Beach.

Rehoboth Art League Cottage Tour

Why I Am a Member

We’re introducing a new column in the RBMS Newsletter: Members tell us why they have joined our organization. Our first member, whom we’ll highlight is Mike Venanzi, co-owner of Above the Dunes and a member of the RBMS Board of Directors.

RBMS: When did you join RBMS?

Mike: 5+ years ago.

RBMS: What were your initial reasons for joining?

Mike: We wanted to make sure we were well-informed of activities around town and had the ability to partake in all available events. In a small town, we need to support all businesses, and being a member of RBMS gives you a sense of community and unity as a business owner. We found it was a great way to discuss business needs with other like-minded people. You have a built-in sounding board for ideas.

RBMS: What do you see as the benefits of RBMS membership (to your business, as well as to the City of Rehoboth Beach)?

Mike: There are many benefits of being a member of RBMS. Some of the ones that stand out most are marketing, exposure to the community, the ability to help other small businesses with ideas and suggestions, and giving back to the community that supports us. RBMS can be a voice for all of us business owners when discussing the larger City of Rehoboth Beach issues. The message comes from the entire business community, not just from an individual.

RBMS: Anything else you'd like to add?

Mike: Being a member of RBMS just makes sense. We all need to support each other in Rehoboth. Joining RBMS gives us the voice we need to make changes when needed and the ability to continue to help grow the business community. For a very small investment, you get a great return. RBMS drives visitors and locals into town with its events and promotions when we need it most.

City of Rehoboth Beach Tree City, USA!

For the 34th year in a row, the City of Rehoboth Beach has earned the Tree City USA designation from the Arbor Day Foundation. This program recognizes cities that are dedicated to planting and caring for trees.

Rehoboth Beach continues to improve its environmental efforts. This year, the city received a $5,000 grant from the Delaware Department of Agriculture to remove invasive plants from public land. As part of this grant, three overgrown Bradford Pear trees will be taken down at the Silver Lake tot lot. In their place, the city will plant five River Birch trees. City Arborist Michael Lilly explains that River Birches will provide shade with smaller branches.

The city is also planting more trees along Delaware Avenue. City officials choose specific tree types to ensure they are safe for the environment and will thrive in the future, Lilly adds.

To celebrate Arbor Day, the City of Rehoboth Beach is working with Rehoboth Beach Elementary School on Thursday, April 17. Students and staff will learn about the importance of trees and help with planting.

Rehoboth Avenue Repaving Returns Next Month

DelDOT will resume repaving Rehoboth Avenue next month, likely in the second week of April, weather permitting. Paving previously completed from the bandstand to 2nd Street was halted in mid-December due to cold temperatures.

With warmer weather, work will continue between 2nd Street and the traffic circle, expected to take about a month. Permanent striping will be added east of 2nd Street, with minimal traffic disruption. The contractor, A-Del, will work overnight from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, Sunday to Friday.

Lane closures and parking restrictions will be necessary, with flaggers managing traffic. The project is anticipated to be completed by Friday, May 16.

Rehoboth Beach Adopts $44 Million Budget for Fiscal Year 2026

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners adopted an approximately $44 million budget for fiscal year 2026, which begins April 1. This $43,993,060 budget, which is $5.4 million larger than the city’s 2025 budget, requires no increase in taxes, rates, or fees.

The city’s FY26 budget includes $28.3 million in general fund expenses and approximately $15 million in its enterprise water and wastewater funds. Across those expenditures, about $11.4 million is dedicated to capital improvements. There is an anticipated $222,735 surplus in revenues over expenses in Rehoboth’s FY26 budget.

“The City of Rehoboth Beach’s overall strong financial position is reflected in our fiscal year 2026 budget,” says City Manager Taylour Tedder. “The newly adopted budget provides for several critical capital improvements and modest salary and benefit increases for our employees, all with a small, anticipated surplus. This year, we began to expand our budget projections and look further into the future as we plan for the city’s needs today.”

City employees will receive a 3% cost-of-living increase in FY26 in addition to an up to 3% merit increase for eligible employees. The city also extended coverage of employees’ health care costs from 90% to 100%; dependents will continue to be covered at an 80% rate.

The city’s budget provides contributions to support several community organizations:

●     $250,000 for the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company

●     $75,000 for the Rehoboth Beach Public Library

●     $60,000 for Rehoboth Beach Main Street

●     $50,000 for the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and Museum.
